As the fishing volume in most squid fishing producing areas continued to be sluggish, the squid inventory in Japan at the end of May fell below 40,000 tons, a decrease of 7% compared with the previous month, and this data has reached a record low.

Compared with the same period last year, Argentina and South Korea, Japan's main squid exporters, both sharply reduced their exports to Japan in the first half of this year.

The shortage of raw material supply may seriously affect squid processing production in Japan. This season should be the peak season for squid fishing production, but the squid fishing volume in the North Pacific and Japanese waters is worrying. The benchmark stock for squid about 10 years ago was 100,000 tonnes. In recent years, this standard has dropped and was set at 70,000-80,000 tons. Even as stock standards tend to fall, stocks below 40,000 tonnes in the summer are considered abnormal.

By the end of May, the stock of common squid, including Argentine squid, was 17,226 tons, a decrease of more than 10,000 tons compared with 27,919 tons in 2015. Typically, stocks continue to decline in June and July, and the low catch will make the low stocks even more pronounced.

Due to the shortage of raw materials, squid processing enterprises are facing the situation of stagnant production and sluggish income. The Japan Squid Processing Enterprises Federation plans to ask the government to expand the import quota to make up for the shortage of squid fishing in the country. This request has been communicated orally to the fisheries department and will be formally filed with the government in the form of official documents in a short period of time.

On the surface, this year's consumption rate appears to be low, but relevant information shows that purchase contracts have actually been increasing. According to people familiar with the matter, if the overseas fishing situation improves, industry insiders will consider handling sudden demand orders on their own.
